The Best Story

Sheila, this was the best flying story I can remember about your Dad.   While returning to our ship from a mission, I developed engine trouble (contaminated fuel) and radioed the same to the Antietam. I was then instructed to circle overhead until the  other aircraft were safely recovered.

This was standard procedure and was done because of the concern that if I crashed on landing, the flight deck would not be able to recover the other aircraft because of the clutter from a crash. I started to climb to 1500 feet when one of the other pilots in the flight in hearing all of  this on his radio asked the ship to land me before them. I

was amazed that his request was approved. I landed and the rest of the flight followed without incident.

That pilot was my friend, LTJG Harvey Wenz and was so typical of his thinking. Something I shall miss forever.
